A  B O O K  O F  C O M F O R T  F O O D.  Inspiring the television series of the same name, this number one best seller is a collection of recipes for ingredients of which I am especially fond, such as garlic, potatoes, bread, sausages, chocolate and ice cream. Photographed by Jonathan Lovekin in my own kitchen.

Although the book was published in 1998, it remains in print to this day and as popular as when it first appeared. Some of the recipes have become much loved, such as the Chocolate Espresso Cake; Roast Chicken with Lemon and Basil; Camembert Baked in its Box; Toasted Smoked Mackerel Sandwich and the Goat's Cheeses in pastry.

Real Food is published in softbackand bound in turquoise blue card. It has 320 pages, is designed by Vivid, photographed by Jonathan Lovekin and printed by Graficas Estella.

From the introduction:
'By real food I mean big-flavoured, unpretentious cooking. Nothing fancy, nothing extravagant, nothing careless or slapdash. Just nice, uncomplicated food. Be it chicken roasted with lemon and basil or simply a big fat mushroom baked in garlic butter and stuffed inside a soft bap. Simple food cooked with care and generosity.
This book is a collection of such food. More than a hundred recipes for the sort of stuff you can make for friends and family to have a good time with. This isn't show-off cooking designed to impress, the sort that uses every pot, pan and knife in the kitchen. This is comforting, nourishing food for those who like to eat for pleasure.'
